Making History at the ASPI Annual Meeting

The ASPI's Annual Meeting, held June 21-23 in Boston, was a truly historical event as the organization celebrated the past twenty years of the State Pain Initiative movement with the highest attendance in history. Over 250 health care professionals, educators, researchers, and advocates from 35 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico were treated to top quality presentations and came away from the meeting inspired, energized, and armed with new resources to transform the culture of pain care. The overwhelming positive feedback from attendees is testament to the meeting's unique format, which emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to improving pain management. The meeting's rousing success also reflects the extremely hard work put in by the host Initiative, the Massachusetts Pain Initiative. Mark your calendar for next year's meeting, which will be held in Austin, TX from October 30 - November 1, 2008.

Didi Loseth Receives Distinguished Service Award

Didi Loseth is the 2007 recipient of the ASPI's Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes Didi's contributions to the State Pain Initiative movement and to improving pain management and palliative care. Countless persons with pain have benefited from Didi's dedication and passion to the mission of improving pain relief through her work as an advanced practice nurse. Didi has also played an integral role in building and sustaining the State Pain Initiative movement through her leadership with the Connecticut Cancer Pain Initiative and the Advisory Council for the ASPI. Congratulations, Didi, on an honor greatly deserved!

State Pain Champions and Public Advocate Honored

Each year, the ASPI recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth, development, and accomplishments of their State Pain Initiative. The 2007 State Pain Initiative Champions are:

Anne White - Arizona Pain Initiative
Hannah Lyons - Massachusetts Pain Initiative
Ann Corley - Missouri Pain Initiative
Beverly Nicholson - Northern California Pain Initiative
Pamela Merriam - Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative

The ASPI's Public Advocacy Award is given to a prominent national or state public figure who has made exceptional contributions to raising awareness of pain as a major health problem and/or championed improvements in pain policy or care. The 2007 recipient is Washington Post reporter Marc Kaufman for his well-balanced and informative reporting on issues related to the use and abuse of prescription pain medicines.

2007 State Pain Policy Report Card Released

The Pain & Policy Studies Group at the University of Wisconsin released its 2007 Progress Report Card and Evaluation Guide on state pain-related policies. The Report Card grades states on the quality of their laws, regulations and other public policies that impact pain management. Eight states (AZ, CA, CO, CT, KS, MA, NH, WI) improved their grades from last year. For more information visit the PPSG's website at http://www.painpolicy.wisc.edu/

New Chairs / Members Take Seat on ASPI Advisory Council

Michelle Grant Ervin, MD, (DC Pain Initiative) was elected to serve as chairperson of the ASPI's 10-member Advisory Council. Carol Curtiss, RN, MSN (Massachusetts Pain Initiative) will serve as chair-elect. Newly elected members of the Advisory Council include Walter Forman, MD (New Mexico Pain Initiative), Chris Herndon, PharmD, (Missouri Pain Initiative) and Sue Morgan, RN, PhD (Alabamians for Pain Relief). The ASPI expresses its heartfelt thanks to outgoing Council members, Rob Kronenberg, PharmD (Arizona Pain Initiative), and Shirley-Otis Green, MSW, (So. California Cancer Pain Initiative) for their dedicated service.

National Pain Care Policy Act Introduced

U.S. Representatives Lois Capps (California) and Mike Rogers (Michigan) introduced the Pain Care Policy Act in Congress earlier this month. Assigned as HR 2994, the proposal is now in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Over 90 organizations, including the ASPI and 27 State Pain Initiatives support HR 2994. For more information visit the American Pain Foundation's website.

Tamper Resistent Pad Requirement Raises Concern

The American Pharmacist Association (APhA) is asking Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to delay the October 1 implementation date for a new federal mandate requiring the use of tamper-resistant prescription pads for all Medicaid prescription orders. The provision was passed with little notice as part of the War Supplemental bill. In a press release calling for a delay, the APhA warned that, "precious little time remains to educate prescribers, pharmacists and patients on this requirement, before pharmacists are forced to turn patients away for not presenting prescriptions on 'approved tamper-resistant' paper." For more information check out the APhA's website.
