ASPI Leader In the National News

The popular national daily newspaper, USA Today 4/25/07, featured an article on palliative care that included the work of Patrick Coyne and his colleagues at Virginia Commonwealth University's Massey Cancer Center in Richmond.  Patrick is chair of the ASPI’s Advisory Council, a founding member of the Virginia Cancer Pain Initiative, and a nationally renowned educator in palliative care and pain management.  You can read the article at http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-04-25-cancer-care_N.htm?csp=34

Montana Forms State Pain Initiative

The ASPI is pleased to welcome Montana to its network of State Pain Initiatives.  The Montana Pain and Symptom Management Task Force, lead by the American Cancer Society, recommended the formation of a Montana Pain Initiative during a statewide conference last month.  Impressed with the extraordinary record of accomplishments by State Pain Initiatives throughout the country, the Montana group sees enormous potential for their own statewide multidisciplinary Pain Initiative organization.  Stay tuned for more good news from Montana.

Illinois Resolution Brings Attention to Pain

A legislative resolution (HR 426) urging Illinois legislators and government officials to step up efforts to improve pain management was recently introduced in the Illinois state legislature.  Supported by the Illinois Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Illinois Pain Initiative, HR 426 calls on state agencies to make information on pain care available for the public and for the legislature to evaluate and improve the state’s public policies related to pain.  You can read HR 426 on the IL legislature’s website at http://www.ilga.gov/
