ASPI ASKS DEA TO MODIFY PROPOSED RULE ON MULTIPLE SCRIPTS

In written comments to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives expressed concerns with a proposed rule by the DEA that allows clinicians to issue multiple prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances on the same day with instructions to fill on later dates.  Although the ASPI supports the practice of issuing multiple prescriptions, it is concerned with certain provisions in the proposed rule that could negatively impact patient care.  Read the ASPI's letter at http://www.aspi.wisc.edu/position.htm

PAIN HIGHLIGHTED IN MAJOR NATIONAL HEALTH REPORT

The Center for Disease Control's annual national health report looks at the problem of inadequately treated pain in the United States. According to the US government's annual, comprehensive report of Americans' health, one in four U.S. adults say they suffered a day-long bout of pain in the past month, and 1 in 10 say the pain lasted a year or more.  For more information on the CDC's report, Health United States-2006, visit: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/06facts/hus06.htm

ASPI PARTICIPATES IN LIVESTRONG SUMMIT FOR CANCER SURVIVORS

The Lance Armstrong Foundation, one of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives national partners, held their inaugural LIVESTRONG Summit October 27-29 in Austin, Texas.  The Summit was a three-day event designed to organize, inspire, and direct the efforts of cancer survivors from across the country to change the face of cancer survivorship.  Through the Summit, the LAF hopes to broaden awareness and impact the unmet physical, emotional and practical needs of people living with cancer, including the problems associated with untreated pain.  Marty Skemp Brown and Ronna Popkin of the national office of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives participated in the Summit as roundtable leaders and national partner representatives.
