Overview

Capital building of Austin, TexasThis unique, interdisciplinary national forum brings together leaders involved in efforts to address the diverse challenges that impede effective pain control.  The 2008 meeting focuses on cutting edge issues in the practice of pain care and highlights the actions essential to overcoming the organizational, societal, regulatory, attitudinal, and clinical barriers that contribute to the undertreatment of pain.  Participants will be able to share resources and expertise, network with one another, and gain the knowledge and motivation to develop and implement programs to improve the care of persons with pain.   

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss approaches for overcoming the historical and current societal, organizational, attitudinal, ethical, legal, and clinical barriers to effective pain control
  • Recall programs and strategies for transforming institutional culture and practices related to pain management
  • Define effective, evidence-based pain management strategies for cancer survivors, culturally diverse groups, persons with cognitive impairment and/or persons with a history of addiction
  • Identify new clinical and pharmacological developments in pain management and complementary approaches to pain care
  • Describe strategies for empowering persons with pain and ways to advocate for balanced approaches in state policies related to effective pain control
  • Recognize opportunities for collaboration among and between the State Pain Initiatives and other local/national organizations with a shared mission to improve pain relief

Who Should Attend

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, complementary medicine practitioners, health care administrators, psychologists, educators, advocates, policy makers, and all individuals interested in improving pain management are invited to attend.


The Alliance of State Pain Initiatives (ASPI) is a network of interdisciplinary, state-based organizations dedicated to improving the care of persons with pain.  The National Office of the ASPI, which is a program of the Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, provides resources and guidance to the State Pain Initiatives and develops educational, advocacy, and institutional improvement programs.
